A pilgrimage with a parish, a congregation or a study group is different from travelling alone. The sites may be the same, but the group's rhythm, its needs and the moments that matter most to it shape every day. These are the questions we work through with group leaders before anything is booked.
Start with the purpose
Is the journey about following a particular story, such as the Seven Churches or the journeys of St Paul, or about seeing the breadth of Christian heritage in Türkiye? A clear purpose makes it easier to choose between Ephesus, Cappadocia, Istanbul, Antioch and Nicaea, and to decide how much time each deserves.
Size and pace
Group size decides the vehicles, the hotels and how quickly the group moves through a site. Large excavations such as Ephesus take several hours on foot, while smaller sites can be seen in a short stop. Most groups are happier with fewer sites and more time at each, especially when readings or reflection are part of the visit.
Readings, prayer and services
Many groups read the relevant passage on location, which most open-air sites accommodate easily. Prayer or services are a different matter: some places allow them with prior arrangement, many protected historical sites do not, and active mosques such as Hagia Sophia welcome visitors outside prayer times with a dress code. We ask on your behalf and tell you honestly what is possible.
Timing
Spring and autumn are generally the most comfortable seasons for walking open-air sites. Summer can be very hot inland and at the excavations. If your group is travelling around Easter or another major feast, tell us early: the dates differ between churches, and some sites are busier at those times.
Accessibility
Ancient streets are uneven, and some sites involve slopes, steps or long distances on foot. Let us know about anyone with reduced mobility so we can plan routes, rest stops and vehicle access around them.
Before you travel
Visa requirements depend on nationality, so each traveller should check the official guidance for their passport. We recommend that every member of the group has travel insurance.
